When should you schedule a well-woman visit?

What types of birth control are available for women today?

Birth control pills (oral contraceptives)

Birth control pills contain estrogen, progestin, or both. When used correctly — on time each day — birth control pills can be more than 99% effective. However, missed or delayed doses can lower effectiveness to around 90%.

Intra-Uterine Device (IUD)

There are two types of IUDs, copper and hormonal. Three to six years is the effective range for hormonal IUDs and copper IUDs can be effective for up to 12 years. IUDs are more than 99% effective.

Birth control implant

A birth control implant releases a progestin hormone, etonogestrel. A birth control implant in your arm can work for up to three years with a better than 99% effectiveness rate.

Permanent birth control

If you're certain that you don't want to have more children, permanent birth control like Essure® fallopian tube implants is an option.
